Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a core and an integral element in driving Action Training Academy's business. Every organisation should have a health & safety policy and be compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993. Listed below are the seven stages of H&S compliance essentials in a logical order.

The compliance process may seem to be an uphill struggle with all the listed requirements; however, many businesses do not realise that they may already be compliant with a number of H&S requirements. Our objective is to assist organisations in planning H&S system implementation and procedures, and to ensure that continuous compliance is made as easy as possible.

LEVEL 1 - H&S ASSESSMENT
By conducting an initial ‘OHS Assessment’ on the company and premises, we can establish what level of compliance has been reached. This involves an initial brief with a senior company representative, usually the H&S Manager, followed by a tour of the premises, post-tour discussion and then submission of a proposal / quotation (within 3 working days) - based on the findings of the OHS assessment. Common areas covered in the assessment:

  • Whether a current Risk Assessment has ever been conducted
  • Current H&S Policy, Appointments and H&S Correspondence
  • Works Instructions and Safe Operating Procedures
  • H&S Reps and H&S Committees minutes
  • Fire and First Aid Equipment and H&S Staff Training
  • Emergency Evacuation Plan and Drills conducted
  • Physical conditions in accordance with various standards

LEVEL 2 - H&S SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION
After the H&S Assessment has been completed it is submitted to management for consideration and approval, the corrective action plan is discussed for implemented, with the aim of improve the existing H&S status of the organization, so that it complies with the appropriate H&S legislation.

LEVEL 3 - H&S TRAINING
The OHS Act legally requires that a certain percentage of an organisation’s employees be trained in the various H&S disciplines of First Aid, Fire Fighting, Emergency Planning, HIV and Health & Safety training. Onsite training is conducted according to identified H&S team gaps identified. The H&S team is critical to the success of any H&S strategy or structure.

LEVEL 4 - H&S EQUIPMENT SUPPLY, INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE
Action Training Academy has an SABS-approved ‘Fire Equipment Servicing Division” - which is able to send out registered technicians or mobile workshops to your premises, to supply and install all your H&S equipment requirements, highlighted in the H&S assessment.

The service includes:

  • Supplying, Installing and Maintaining Fire Fighting Equipment (Extinguishers & Hose Reels)
  • Supply and Install First Aid Supplies (Regulation 3 and 7)
  • OHS Directional Signage and emergency evacuation floor / building plans
  • Emergency service jump kits (BLS, ILS and ALS)

LEVEL 5 - EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLANNING
This is an excellent means of ensuring a prepared working environment, which will ultimately reduce loss-of-life and property, should an emergency incident occur.

Emergency and Evacuation Response procedures are designed according to the organisation’s premises and staff locations. Staff are appointed and trained to carry out certain emergency duties, which are based on their H&S training skills. Evacuation assembly areas are designated and floor plans are drawn, printed and mounted, showing equipment locations, evacuation routes and assembly areas. The emergency practice drills are normally conducted every six months, depending on the level of preparedness.

LEVEL 6 - EVALUATION, REVIEW AND APPROVAL
The effectiveness of the system is measured by the H&S Committee, and by conducting regular assessments and audits. A H&S system and standards should be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and as soon as a non-conformance is detected, corrective and remedial action must be taken.

LEVEL 7 - RISK ASSESSMENT / HIRA
This is a comprehensive HIRA assessment, which establishes the hazards to personnel, property and the environment in your organisation. It is conducted by one of our in-house H&S risk assessment specialists together with the organizations staff input and team, who together spend an extensive amount of time at the organisation - assessing and gathering information and findings for the report.

A comprehensive findings report is then submitted with photographs, suggested corrective actions and expected pricing structures. The ultimate objective is to ensure that the findings are addressed and maintained, in order for the organisation to adhere and comply with the OHS Act. Action Training can carry out a detailed risk assessment; however, it is a lengthy procedure. We make the effort to understand the business and its people fully, before submitting a detailed report to management.
